Was founded in 1854 by persons of Italian descent and named after Genoa, Italy.

From the village of Genoa you can watch towboats and barges "lock through" at Lock and Dam No. 8 at the south edge of the village. You can fish from a barge anchored below the dam. Scenic river overlooks are located along The Great River Road north of town.
